Which controller mappers for Mac are actually free?

InputConfig, made by Rockstar Health, is a free controller mapper for Mac with nothing locked, and its code is open source under the MIT license.

Recontrol, Enjoyable and JoyKeyMapper are free in the same way. Several more say free on the download button and then charge for a controller, a feature or more days. We sorted them into those two groups so you can see the difference before you install anything. We make InputConfig, so weigh our view with that in mind.

How we would choose

On macOS 12 or 13. InputConfig will not install, so look at Gamepad Mapper or JoyMapper.

Joy-Cons only. JoyKeyMapper is small, free and open source.

One Steam game. Steam Input is already installed and is enough.

Enjoyable still works for you. There is no reason to move.

Hands that tire, MIDI gear, switches or one-stick driving. That is what our founder built InputConfig for, because his own hands do not work well, and nothing in it is locked.

Why open source matters for this kind of app

Every mapper needs the Accessibility permission, which lets it send keystrokes and clicks to every app on your Mac. With the code public, anyone can read what an app does with that permission. InputConfig, Enjoyable and JoyKeyMapper publish theirs under the MIT license.

InputConfig also runs in Apple's App Sandbox with no network entitlement, so it cannot reach the internet, and it has no account and no analytics. The entitlements file is in its GitHub repository for anyone to check.

Get each one from its maker

Search results for these apps are full of download sites that repackage them, and for the paid ones, so-called free or cracked copies. Because every mapper can type and click anywhere on your Mac, a tampered copy is a real risk. Get InputConfig, Recontrol, JoyKeyMapper, Gamepad Mapper, JoyMapper and ConMapper from the Mac App Store, Enjoyable from yukkurigames.com or Codeberg, and Karabiner-Elements from karabiner-elements.pqrs.org.

The full guide

The step by step setup lives on the InputConfig site: the full free mapper list, with versions. InputConfig is free on the Mac App Store, open source under the MIT license, and runs on macOS 14 or later on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
